fortresses to visit in Armenia

Armenia’s monasteries and churches are popular destinations for tourists. There are hardly any travelers who did not visit any of its medieval monasteries located less than one hour’s drive from Yerevan. However, if you are into historical castles and fortresses, Armenia also has much to offer. If you want to climb a real medieval construction and reach seemingly unassailable rocks, here are 7 fortresses to visit in Armenia.

Some of the constructions are unique as they are nestled in the mountainous terrain standing as witnesses to centuries of Armenia’s turmoil past. Traveling to the fortresses is a journey through time during which you discover Armenia’s Urartian legacy and medieval history.

Sometimes it is hard to imagine how people managed to build them on the rocks without special equipment. Of course, some of them have been damaged heavily, but even now you can see how great and powerful they looked in the past. Let’s dive into history and explore the fortresses that are worth visiting during your next trip to Armenia.

Erebuni Fortress

The Urartian fortified city founded by King Argishti I in 782 BC is located in Yerevan and is considered the birthplace of Armenia’s capital city. It used to serve as a strategic and military stronghold of the Urartian Kingdom. The palace of Argishti and other buildings as well as numerous artifacts were discovered during the excavations. An inscription at the entrance of the palace says Argishti built this mighty stronghold and proclaimed it Erebuni.

The museum and the ruins of the building are easy to reach as it is only 20 drive from Yerevan downtown.

Amberd Fortress

A picturesque fortress on the slopes of Armenia’s highest mountain Aragats dates back to 7-10th centuries. It served as a strategic military defensive point. Some sources suggest that it was a summer residence of the Armenian kings. The fortress was considered impregnable thanks to its defensive architecture. Although it faced numerous invasions, including the attack by Mongols in 1236, some of its walls are preserved. The buildings include fortress walls, a bathhouse, the palace, and the Church of Surb Astvatsatsin (Holy Virgin).

The fortress offers a glimpse into Armenia’s medieval past and its remarkable cultural heritage and is definitely an ideal place for excellent shots.

Smbataberd Fortress

An awe-inspiring moment on top of a rocky hill in Vayots Dzor province is believed to be one of the largest medieval fortresses in the region. Historians do not know the exact date when it was built but the evidence it already existed in the 5th century.  It bears the name of Smbat, one of the dukes of the Orbelyan dynasty. The basalt walls, towers, and structures showcase the architectural ingenuity of the time. This is a great spot for history enthusiasts and hikers to explore Armenia’s medieval heritage and enjoy the stunning panoramic views.

Bjni Fortress

This medieval fortress is on the right bank of the Hrazdan River near the Bjni village in Kotayk province. The Pahlavuni family built it in the 9th to 10th centuries. Visiting the fortress is quite easy as it is only 40 minutes away from Yerevan. The main construction was damaged over time, but one of the main walls of the fortress still stands and can be reached via a narrow road. The best time to visit it and enjoy the impressive landscapes is from March to October.

Before climbing the mountain, do not forget to visit several churches, including Surb Astvatsatsin church which dates to 1031.

Sev Berd

The Black Fortress or Sev Berd stands aside thanks to its original color and architecture. When traveling to Gyumri, Armenia’s second-largest city, visit this unique 360-degree structure built at the beginning of the 19th century using black tuff. The Russian Empire paid special attention to the fortification of Gyumri which was then a part of the Empire. In addition to being a must-see historical site, it also hosts concerts and other cultural events.

Berdavan Fortress

Berdavan dates to the 10-11 century and is located on a hilltop near the border with Azerbaijan. Today’s standing structure is the 17th-century fortifications. It underwent some renovation during the Soviet Union. There is also a church, a medieval cemetery, and a chapel just 200 meters away from the fortress.

Lori Fortress

The captivating ruins of Lori Fortress are 5 km from the city of Stepanavan, Lori Province. Its unique structure and mountainous terrain made it difficult to be reached by the enemies. This architectural gem was a major trading center for Armenia and had a population of around 10 thousand people. Thus, it had major strategic importance and was seized by Turks and Persians from the mid-16th to 18th century. The beautiful setting and mind-blowing landscapes make it a must-see destination during a trip to Armenia’s north.
