History lovers will be captivated by the ancient mysteries hidden within the Areni 1 cave, a remarkable archaeological site. It’s a place where one can see artifacts dating back thousands of years. Besides, there is an awe-inspiring Noravank Monastery, a medieval masterpiece nestled in the rugged landscape, and the Smbataberd fortress dating back 9-11 centuries.

For wine enthusiasts, the province offers a delightful journey along its scenic wine routes, where you can enjoy the rich flavors amidst breathtaking landscapes. Driving to the west is the resort town of Jermuk with its mineral springs and wellness resorts.

Stay tuned to discover what this province can offer to the tourists.

Enjoy Wines in Areni

When speaking about Armenian wine, one cannot but remember the grape varieties like Areni and Voskehat that have been known for millennia. The province is literally a cradle of winemaking where researchers discovered the the world’s oldest winery.

Thanks to its mild climate and volcanic soil, this region is a perfect foundation for the vineyards that grow here at 1200-1800 meters above sea level.

There are several dozen wineries along the so-called wine route that enable travelers to explore its bustling wine culture and scenic vineyards of Vayots Dzor. Overall, it’s a 20-kilometer road that continues to the city of Yeghagnadzor. The most popular is the Areni Wine Factory where one can explore the production process and taste the local wines. However, there are also such wineries as Koor, Zorah, Old Bridge, Trinity Canyon Vineyards, Hin Areni Winery, and others.

Areni Cave

This region has been inhabited for thousands of years. The proofs are found in Areni 1 cave, an archaeological marvel and a testament to the ancient roots of winemaking. This cave uncovers the lifestyle of people living in this area for over 6,000 years.

First of all, it is referred to as the world’s oldest winery. A groundbreaking discovery within Areni-1 unveiled a collection of ancient artifacts. Among them were clay vessels for wine, providing tangible evidence of winemaking activities.

Beyond its winemaking significance, Areni-1 has revealed other archaeological wonders, including a leather shoe believed to be the world’s oldest known footwear. It was found in excellent condition and is now displayed at the History Museum of Armenia.

Among other artifacts are a straw skirt dating back to 3900 BC. The researchers also found the sculls of three people with one containing brain remains that is described as the oldest brain found so far.

So, if you still doubt whether to visit the province, now you know what unbelievable things you can see here. The cave is open to tourists, so you can drive only 2 hours to visit the place where all those major discoveries were made.

Visit Noravank Monastery and Smbataberd Fortress

Vayots Dzor is also famous for the Noravank Monastery, a wonderful example of medieval Armenian architecture representing the historical and cultural richness of the province.

Dating back to the 13th century, this architectural gem stands amidst red cliffs. Noravank, meaning “New Monastery” in Armenian. It showcases intricate stone carvings, khachkars, and the renowned Surb Astvatsatsin (Holy Mother of God) Church. Sculptor and miniaturist Momik completed the construction of the church in 1339. It is considered his last work, and the sculptor is buried in a tomb nearby. When visiting Noravank, one can see many decorative elements such as columns, arches, and crosses of various shapes. A unique feature is the representation of God the Father in Surb Karapet Church.

In addition to its historical and cultural significance, Noravank monastery stands out thanks to its location the views of red rock cliffs opening from the monastery are breathtaking.

The Smbataberd Fortress meaning “fortress of Smbat” in Armenian is a medieval construction offering panoramic views of the surrounding terrain. Its origins may be traced back to the 5th century or 9-11th centuries. In fact, the fortress reached prominence as the main stronghold for the Armenian princes of Syunik. Smbataberd boasts well-preserved basalt walls standing guard at an elevation of 2000 meters. Visitors can explore the fortress’s well-preserved walls, towers, and chambers, immersing themselves in the history of the region.

Relax in Jermuk

Jermuk is a resort town captivating travelers with its unique charm and mineral waters. The town owes its popularity to the exceptional thermal mineral springs that dot the landscape. One can find Jermuk mineral water in every store in Armenia and far beyond. Local heavily carbonated water is a remedy for intestinal, liver, and nervous disorders, and is used for drinking and bath treatment.

Jermuk sits amidst picturesque hills and deep gorges, surrounded by lush Alpine greenery and forests. Moreover, its modern spa facilities, parks, and recreation zones cater to those seeking relaxation.

There is also a beautiful 70-meter-high waterfall here that is a famous site in the resort town and is popular because of the legend it is associated with. A daughter of a nobleman fell in love with the shepherd. When the nobleman found out they were in love, he banned her from dating the young man. However, they disobeyed and every night the girl threw her long hair into the gorge as a rope to lift her lover to the castle. One day the father found the rope and turned the daughter into a mermaid. At night the girl’s hair became a waterfall.

With artifacts that date back millennia, a medieval monastery and a fortress, unforgettable wine adventure, and relaxation in a spa town – Vayots Dzor is a must-visit destination for those seeking a diverse and captivating journey.
