Armenia's best photo spots

Not a single tourist returns from his journey without taking dozens (in many cases even thousands) of photos for Instagram. In this sense, Armenia with its picturesque landscapes and cultural treasures is a perfect match. Armenia’s best photo spots are located in Yerevan and outside the city.

As the allure of Instagram continues to grow, capturing high-quality images in extraordinary locations has become an art form. Armenia did not stand aside and made it into the 50 most Instagrammable destinations worldwide for 2021 by Big 7 Travel. The travel website held a survey among their 600 thousand followers on their accounts and analyzed Instagram hashtags for countries around the world.

Of course, there are different views about Armenia’s “most Instagrammable spots”. We decided to form our list to help add Instagram-worthy gems to your travel bucket list.

Cascade

Cascade Armenia

The Cascade in Yerevan stands as an architectural masterpiece and a haven for Instagram photo lovers. This grand stairway, contemporary art installations, and cascading fountains are a great spot for the best shots. However, it’s a stunning panoramic view of the city, and Mount Ararat that is the number one advantage of the Cascade. Each level of the stairs presents unique photo opportunities, from the monumental sculptures to the vibrant greenery. This place is definitely on a bucket list and appears on the Instagram of almost all tourists. Whether capturing the urban vibe or the scenic landscape, the Cascade is undeniably one of Yerevan’s best spots for snapping a photo.

Vernissage

Vernissage, the open-air market in Yerevan, is a hub for cultural immersion and a renowned place to find local crafts and souvenirs. The market attracts tourists seeking traditional jewelry, handicrafts, chess, traditional clothes, and other stuff. The vibrant atmosphere coupled with colorful Armenian carpets, handmade crafts, and local artwork, creates an ideal backdrop for captivating photos. It can be a background for a traditional Yerevan photoshoot and a must-visit market for those looking to capture the essence of Armenia.

Symphony of Stones

Now let’s move out of Yerevan in search of unique natural wonders. The first on our way is the Symphony of Stones. Basalt columns resembling huge organ pipes cover the gorge near the Temple of Garni. This nature-made wall appears in the photos of many tourists visiting Armenia, and it’s a guarantee that your photo will get many likes. The light and shadow on these unique rock formations, with the picturesque backdrop of the surrounding landscape, create a visual symphony. By the way, professional photographers love this. For example, Vogue magazine did a photo shoot featuring famous model Stella Maxwell near the Symphony of Stones and at Vernissage.

Garni Temple

The next great spot on our way is the Temple of Garni. It’s a remarkable pagan monument in Armenia that captivates visitors by its beauty and historical significance. Luckily for Instagram lovers, here one can admire the panoramic views of a gorge and beautiful mountains. Thus, Garni Temple stands not just as a historical relic but as a captivating place for those who want to make the best shots.

Gutanasar

Unlike other spots that have always been on the list of tourists visiting Armenia, Gutanasar has probably become popular thanks to Instagram.  In fact, it’s a dormant volcano, one slope of which is made of dark sand. It seems like you are standing near a black dune somewhere in the south of Africa. The view is really breathtaking and is not typical for Armenia. The place has gone viral among Armenian social media users and has been a place for professional photo shoots as well.

Khor Virap

The medieval monastery is located very close to Mount Ararat. If you are lucky with the weather, getting a shot of the mountain from here is a photographer’s dream. Beyond its picturesque setting, Khor Virap holds immense historical significance. It is a pilgrimage site and the place where St. Gregory the Illuminator was imprisoned for 13 years. By the way, it was one of the spots visited by Pope Francis during his visit to Armenia where he was photographed when releasing doves in the direction of the closed border between Armenia and Turkey as a sign of peace.

Charents’ Arch

They say this arch located on the road to Garni Temple offers the best-ever view of Mount Ararat. Although it’s not as close as Khor Virap, here you can take photos against the backdrop of the mountain in the “frame” of an arch. Raphael Israelyan built the monument in 1957. He dedicated the arch to famous poet Yeghishe Charents who was finding inspiration in the beauty of this mountain.

Tatev Monastery

Unlike in the case of previous destinations, a journey to Tatev Monastery will take more time. However, tourists will be rewarded with rugged landscapes and the medieval charm of the monastery on the edge of a beautiful gorge. The real adventure kicks in as you make your way to Tatev via the Wings of Tatev, an aerial tramway boasting panoramic views. Here you have numerous opportunities to surprise your Instagram followers with great shots from your journey through Armenia.
