One of the most searched questions is whether Armenia is considered Europe or Asia. Geographically Armenia is considered Asia. It’s a landlocked country with an area of only 29,743 square kilometers that is bordering with Georgia, Iran, Turkey, and Azerbaijan.

Armenia is located at the crossroads of Europe and Asia and this has had a huge impact on its history and culture.

2. Armenia is a Monoethnic Country

Armenia is one of the monoethnic countries in the world. Armenians make up 98.1 % of the population. Ethnic minorities here are Yazidis, Assyrians, Russians, Greeks, Jews, and others. It’s a small country with a population of approximately 3 million. However, it has recently faced a flow of migrants from other countries.

Armenia’s population has experienced fluctuation over the years because of wars and poor economic conditions in the 90s. Yerevan is the largest city and the most densely populated area in the country.

3. Ancient History

Armenia boasts one of the world’s oldest civilizations, with a history dating back over 3,000 years. Moreover, evidence of Armenia’s ancient past is well preserved in the History Museum of Armenia. Located in the heart of Yerevan, it houses a large collection of artifacts and archeological findings that date back to the Bronze Age.

4. First Christian Nation

Armenia is the first nation to adopt Christianity as its state religion in 301 AD, a significant milestone in world history. This historic event occurred under the reign of King Tiridates III. Saint Gregory the Illuminator was the founder and the first head of the Armenian church.

The significance of Armenia’s conversion to Christianity is huge as it had an enduring influence on the Armenian identity. The Armenian Apostolic Church is one of the oldest Christian institutions. Moreover, Etchmiadzin Cathedral is regarded as one of the oldest cathedrals in the world. The town of Etchmiadzin houses the spiritual and administrative headquarters of the Armenian Apostolic Church.

5. Armenian Language

The Armenian language is a fascinating subject to explore. It has a unique and ancient script, invented by Mesrop Mashtots in the 5th century AD. The Armenian alphabet consists of 39 letters. Armenia belongs to the Indo-European family and is an independent branch.  Around 7 million people in the world speak Armenian. The speakers mostly live in Armenia and the countries with large Armenian communities.

6. Armenian Bread

lavash

Your trip will be nothing without trying delicious Armenian cuisine. Let’s start with the fascinating fact that the Armenian bread – lavash has been inscribed on the UNESCO List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. It’s formed from simple ingredients flour and water but is baked in a special traditional clay oven. In general, Armenians use it as a wrap rolling around everything from barbeque to cheese, greens, and vegetables. The advantage of lavash is it can be preserved for several months. The bread is kept dry, and once you want to make it fresh again, soak or spring water on it.

7. Armenia has UNESCO Monuments

Several monuments located in Armenia are included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site list for their exceptional cultural and natural significance around the globe. Among them are the monasteries of Haghpat and Sanahin, remarkable examples of medieval architecture. Although the monuments survived numerous attacks and earthquakes they are in good condition. Another UNESCO-listed gem is the Geghard Monastery which is partially carved into the rock. Here you can also admire khachkars, stone carvings, and unique ornamental details. And, of course, the third on the list is the cathedral and churches of Etchmiadzin, a religious center of Armenia, along with the archeological site of Zvartnots.

8. Oldest Shoe and Winery

Another fascinating fact about Armenia is the remarkable archaeological discoveries that shed light on the country’s ancient history. The Areni-1 cave was home to one of the world’s oldest wineries dating back to 6,100 years, with evidence of grape fermentation and winemaking equipment. This highlights Armenia’s role as one of the birthplaces of wine production and is a great reason to try Armenian wine during your trip.

In addition, a well-preserved leather shoe dating back to 5,500 was discovered in the cave. It’s officially one of the oldest examples of footwear found so far. Luckily the shoe is on display, and you can see it with your own eyes at the History Museum.

9. A Land of Apricot

Armenia is for sure popular for its variety of delicious fruits. However, it’s literally the land of apricots. The Latin name of the apricot is “Prunus armeniaca”. Some evidence suggests that apricots were eaten in ancient Armenia. The climate here is ideal for growing apricots and local fruits are one of the best in the world. Be sure to taste them during your visit!

10. Armenians Obsessed With Chess

Chess is extremely popular in this small country. Since its independence in 1991, Armenia’s chess players won the World Team Championship, Chess Olympiad, and other tournaments. In addition, in 2011 the country went further and was the first in the world to include chess in the school curriculum. Now chess is a compulsory subject in all public schools.
