Armenia in autumn

Autumn is the perfect time to visit Armenia, especially if you prefer mild temperatures over the intense summer heat.

In some countries, autumn may be considered a depressing season. However, you can hardly tell it in the case of Armenia, especially Yerevan. September feels like summer with cooler evenings and milder heat. As for me, October is the king with its pleasant temperatures, sunny days and the best time to explore historical sites. People who visit Yerevan in September or October might be surprised to see that the only additional clothing you need is a light jacket. Of course, it depends on the province but overall, this time is special.

First, the mountains look wonderful in the fall. When you travel to the countryside, the colors range from purple to green. Pleasant weather and vibrant landscapes will accompany you. Additionally, there are fewer crowds.

Finally, it’s time for the harvest season and fresh produce, like grapes, fruits and vegetables, let alone exceptional warm dishes. This blog will guide you through the best things to do and see in Armenia this autumn.

Admire Autumn Colors

Armenia’s nature truly comes to life in autumn, offering some of the most breathtaking landscapes. There are numerous spots where you can enjoy it. Not a single blog is enough to name all but we will mention some popular destinations.

One of the best places to experience this is Dilijan National Park. The resort town of Dilijan often called the Switzerland of Armenia is popular for its stunning views. The hike from Lake Parz to Gosh village is a fantastic way to explore this region. Along the way, when hiking in the mountains of Dilijan you will encounter monasteries like Goshavank or Haghartsin, surrounded by the golden hues of fall.

Traveling to the north is also a good idea. Lori Province combines the historical atmosphere in the monasteries of Sanahin, Haghpat, and the village of Dsegh with the region’s natural beauty.

A trip to Lake Sevan offers a chance to stroll along the shores of Armenia’s largest lake. Of course, it may be cold as the weather here is unpredictable but the color of water and delicious cuisine in the local restaurants is worth visiting.

Meanwhile, Tatev Monastery also provides dramatic autumn views. Traveling to the monastery by the famous aerial tramway is exceptional when colorful trees cover the mountains.

Enjoy Walks in Yerevan

Walking through Yerevan in the fall is a delightful experience. The weather is still warm, making it perfect for leisurely strolls around the city’s streets and parks. Yerevan’s parks become even more beautiful as the autumn leaves turn golden and red. One of the unique places is an old Children’s Railway with old trees and beautiful views of the gorge inside the city.

Open-air cafés continue to welcome visitors, offering cozy spots to sit and admire iconic landmarks like the Cascade. From these cafés, you can enjoy a delicious meal, whether you’re in the mood for Armenian barbecue, or Chinese cuisine.

Yerevan is also famous for its coffee culture, so don’t miss the opportunity to visit one of the city’s many coffee shops. Try a cup of Armenian coffee, which is a cultural experience in itself.

Attend Autumn Festivals

Another option to have a good time is to visit one of the vibrant festivals. One of the most popular events is the Areni Wine Festival, held annually in the village of Areni, the cradle of Armenian winemaking. This event offers visitors a chance to taste local wines and enjoy Armenian music and dances. The festival has greatly boosted wine tourism, with new wineries and gastro yards appearing each year.

The Pumpkin Festival in Hovk village is another highlight. It celebrates Armenia’s beloved pumpkin-based dish, ghapama. Visitors can enjoy a day filled with pumpkin dishes and activities.

Finally, the Balloon Festival offers a breathtaking experience where participants can soar over Armenia’s stunning landscapes in hot air balloons, providing a unique perspective of the country’s autumn beauty. These festivals bring Armenia’s autumn to life, offering something for everyone.

Visit a Winery

Visiting a winery in Armenia is a perfect idea, especially with the grape harvest in full swing. Grapes hold a special significance in Armenian culture, and the country’s winemaking traditions date back thousands of years. While Yerevan has its share of wine bars, you are better off going to Vayots Dzor or Aragatsotn provinces having picturesque wineries.

Tourists can explore this ancient tradition through winery tours that include vineyard walks and wine tastings.

Armenia’s winemaking heritage emphasizes indigenous grape varieties, which gives its red, rosé, and white wines a distinct character. In fact, one of the world’s oldest wineries was discovered here.

Culinary Experiences in Armenia This Autumn

Regardless of the season, Armenian food is worth trying. However, with cold weather approaching there are some dishes that are a perfect example of so-called comfort food.

One must-try dish is harissa, a thick porridge made with cracked wheat and chicken, slow-cooked to perfection. Often enjoyed during special occasions or just during weekends in autumn and winter, this hearty meal warms you during cold autumn days. Another autumn favorite is ghapama, a pumpkin stuffed with rice, dried fruits, and honey, and baked until golden. This beloved dish is so iconic in Armenian culture that there’s even a traditional song dedicated to it.

Besides, there is a great variety of fruits and vegetables that have amazing flavors. It’s also time for homemade dried fruits and you will be impressed by tastes and colors.  Don’t miss out on Armenian desserts flavored with cinnamon, or teas brewed from local herbs.
