Spring is the perfect time to visit Armenia. The cold is gone, flowers are blooming, and the sun makes mountains even more beautiful. Choosing spring tours to Armenia means having a chance to learn more about Armenia’s culture and history, combined with hiking.

In this blog, we’ll help you figure out what to do, where to go, and how to make the most of your spring getaway in Armenia. Trust us, you’ll want to pack your bags after reading this.

Why Visit Armenia in Spring?

Sanahin in spring

Spring gives you all the right vibes if you want a peaceful escape. From early April, Yerevan’s streets start buzzing. Of course, it depends on the weather, and sometimes it may even snow. However, in recent years, the weather has been milder. It’s the time of the year when numerous outdoor cafés fill up in Yerevan, while the mountains turn green and fresh.

In April, temperatures may rise to 20 °C in Yerevan, but check the weather before going to the northern provinces or Sevan. It may be much colder.

There are also a few special holidays during spring that give you a real taste of Armenian culture. You might even catch a local celebration or a street event. If you do not like planning, no worries, there are guaranteed tours to cover all must-see places

Spring Holidays

easter in Armenia

Spring in Armenia is a time of vibrant celebrations and traditions. Spring starts from the celebration of International Women’s Day on March 8, which is a day off in Armenia. On this day, women get flowers and gifts, and there is festive energy on the streets of Yerevan.  This is the so-called month-long celebration culminating on April 7 with Motherhood and Beauty Day.

Easter, or “Zatik,” as Armenians call it, is another significant spring holiday in Armenia. It’s a very important holiday for Armenians.  A week before Easter, the Armenian Apostolic Church celebrates Palm Sunday. This is the time when many people go to church with flowers, willow branches, and wreaths. Armenians usually take the consecrated willow branches and wreaths back home. Preparations for Easter include planting wheat seeds to symbolize new life. Dyeing eggs, traditionally using red onion peels, is a must. This is a family holiday when people gather for a festive meal featuring dishes like rice with raisins, fish, and the beloved Easter gata pastry.

Adding to the spring festivities, there are always some fun events that you can visit. This year, Yerevan, for example, will host the  Zatik Wine Festival. This event will showcase a variety of Armenian wines, offering attendees the chance to meet winemakers, enjoy local cuisine, and partake in cultural activities.

Fun Things to Do in Armenia in Spring

Start with Yerevan as spring transforms into a colorful, lively city. The outdoor cafés near the Cascades, Northern Avenue and along busy Saryan and Pushkin streets fill with people enjoying the sun. Trees start blooming everywhere and it’s the perfect time to walk and feel the city vibe. The routes outside the capital city depend on your preferences and budget, but here are some options to consider.

Hike in Dilijan National Park

Dilijan is often called the “Armenian Switzerland,” and in spring, it truly lives up to the name. The hiking trails are surrounded by lush forests and clean mountain air. It might be colder than in Yerevan so take warm clothes, but hiking or horseback riding in addition to delicious food in local restaurants is unforgettable.

Visit Lake Sevan

Lake Sevan in early spring is calm, quiet, and incredibly scenic. The snow begins to melt off the surrounding hills, flowers pop up along the shores, it’s a little bit cold, but the breeze is refreshing.

Go on Wine Tastings in Areni

Areni is Armenia’s wine capital, and spring brings the vineyards back to life. Tourists can tour small family-run wineries, enjoy tastings with delicious snacks, and learn about ancient winemaking traditions.

Picnic in Lori or Tavush

The Lori and Tavush regions are a spring paradise. These destinations are full of meadows, forests, and rivers. With flowers all around, the atmosphere feels magical and earthy. There are many historical sites in both provinces, including UNESCO-listed Haghpat and Sanahin monasteries in Lori. So, you can combine a tour of historical sites with an ideal spot for a peaceful picnic.

Discover Canyons – Garni or Noravank Gorge

Garni gorge is breathtaking any time of year, but spring adds a splash of green color. Of course, people come here to enjoy the legendary Garni Temple, but the scenery is so beautiful that one can just stand staring at the mountains for an hour. The Symphony of Stones is another attraction. These basalt columns look like giant organs shaped by volcanic activity and erosion.

Traveling to Noravank Monastery and enjoying the surrounding cliffs is also a great idea. The road to the gorge is scenic, and you can stop to take breathtaking photos.
