green mountains, picnic spot

Some weekends are made for adventure. Others? They’re meant for lounging on a picnic blanket while the kids play and wind in the background. And with Armenia’s hot summers, getting out of the city even for a few hours can feel like hitting reset. Perfect time to look for picnic spots in Armenia.

Imagine it’s Saturday morning and the sun’s already heating up Yerevan, and you’re not in the mood to stay indoors. There are some days when people don’t want a long tour or another museum visit. Fresh air, green space, and a slow, relaxing day are the only things one needs.

There are some places that are perfect for unwinding, snacking under the trees, and enjoying nature without needing a big plan or reason. This blog will guide you through some picnic spots in Yerevan and outside where you can do nothing but recharge.

Yerevan Spots for a Picnic

Yerevan may not be overflowing with parks, but that doesn’t mean you can’t find a calm, green place to enjoy a summer picnic. There are some parks in downtown and you can lie on the grass near the Opera House or in the English Park, but it’s usually too hot in the summer, let alone the traffic and noise.

One of the best hidden spots for relaxing is the Yerevan Botanical Garden. Founded in 1935, the garden covers around 80 hectares and is home to hundreds of native and exotic plant species. As you walk deeper into its shaded paths, you’ll discover forested areas that offer cool relief from the scorching Yerevan sun.

It’s quiet and peaceful. For example, one can often see squirrels darting across the walkways and birds chirping overhead. The garden is open daily and even features a Paleobotanical Museum if you’re in the mood for something educational after your picnic. It’s one of the few places in the city where you can truly disconnect and reconnect with nature. Kids love it as they can ride a bicycle and a scooter.

Another spot to consider is Tumanyan Park, located along the Hrazdan Gorge. This urban park offers grassy areas perfect for stretching out with a blanket and picnic basket. It also has playgrounds for kids, making it ideal for families.

Jrvezh Forest Park

It’s so close to Yerevan that you can barely call it “outside” the city. Jrvezh Forest Park is just 10 kilometers away and feels like a natural extension of the capital, yet it’s a place where you are completely surrounded by nature.

The park is a favorite among families and nature lovers. With no entrance fee and just a small parking charge, Jrvezh is accessible year‑round. When driving or hiking deeper in the park, the visitors can find panoramic views of Mount Ararat, giving their picnic spot a majestic backdrop.

Relaxing Near Lake Sevan

Lake Sevan is one of Armenia’s most iconic natural treasures. It’s one of the places for a summer escape. But timing is everything. While it may be tempting to visit in May or early June, the weather during those months can be unpredictable. Windy days, sudden rain, and chilly water are not uncommon. For the best experience, it’s wiser to plan your visit once the real summer heat starts, typically from late June through August.

During the summer months, the lake transforms into a serene place. You can stretch out on the shore, enjoy the breeze, and look at the sparkling blue water. However, for a truly relaxing experience, it’s important to choose your spot carefully. Avoid the busy, tourist-heavy areas near the Akhtamar Peninsula and Sevanavank Monastery, where crowds and loud music can break the peace. Instead, explore the quieter shores, where nature is more untouched and the atmosphere is calm.

You can also take a dip in the cool water, try paddleboarding or other water sports, or simply lie back and do nothing at all.

Heading to Dilijan

Armenia tours

If there’s one place in Armenia that feels like it was made just for summer picnics, it’s Dilijan. This resort is located in forested mountains and offers fresh, crisp air, mineral springs and lush greenery. Dilijan is the perfect place to relax and reconnect with nature, spread out a picnic blanket and enjoy incredible views.

For an unforgettable view, head up the slopes of Mount Dimats. You can hike or drive, and from the top, you’ll enjoy panoramic views of Dilijan’s rolling hills and deep green valleys. Another must-visit is Parz Lake, a tranquil spot surrounded by thick forest, ideal for relaxing, boating, and light hiking.

The town itself is a blend of old-world charm and modern comfort. Dilijan National Park spans over 33,000 hectares and includes the magical Deer Park, where visitors can feed the Caucasian red deer. So there are so many spots just to relax in the nature.

Debed Canyon

Sanahin in spring

Another calm and quiet place will require a 22-hour-long drive, but every minute is worth it. Just a few hours north of Yerevan, the Lori province and the stunning Debed Canyon. This dramatic gorge is lined with steep cliffs and charming villages perched on its edges

When you arrive, you’ll immediately feel the canyon’s special energy. The roadside overlooks invite you to spread out a blanket in a peaceful nook. It’s nature’s amphitheater, perfect for lazy afternoons filled with fresh air.

The canyon is also ideal for horseback riding and playing outdoor games. It’s not only about scenery, but also a cultural treasure. If you leave your picnic spot for hiking, you can visit one of the medieval monasteries like Sanahin, Haghpat, or Kobayr.
