Information

sevanavank and view of lake sevan

As summer approaches, there’s no better destination to beat the heat and enjoy nature’s tranquility than Lake Sevan.  Armenia’s picturesque jewel is popular for its stunning landscapes and is also known for unpredictable weather.

Located in the Gegharkunik Province, Lake Sevan appears beautiful in the photos of tourists and travel guides. However, we can assure you that seeing the lake with your own eyes is beyond words.  The color of the water changes depending on the season. It may look dark blue during the winter months and Maldives-like turquoise in summer. Besides, there are places with white sand that are quite unusual for freshwater lakes.

You can spend a day full of different activities from swimming and hiking to visiting a medieval monastery and birdwatching. This is what makes this high-altitude lake a popular destination for tourists. Let’s see what tourists can do in Sevan.

How to Get to Sevan?

Sevan view

The easiest way to reach Sevan is by taxi, although there are other more affordable options. If you prefer driving, the approximately 70-kilometer journey from Yerevan to Lake Sevan takes just over an hour by car.

The taxi cost depends on the apps you are booking but starts from 9,000 drams (around $22). You can also rent a car via our rental services.

For an affordable option, consider taking the Yerevan-Shorzha electric train. However, the electric train usually starts operating in summer. Minibuses departing from the Northern Bus Station or downtown Yerevan metro station are also available.

Hiking and Enjoying Sevan Nature

One of the main reasons tourists come to Sevan is to admire its stunning views. The mountains surrounding the lake look gorgeous any time of the year. However, be prepared for Sevan’s unpredictable weather and bring warm clothes. Pick Sevan Peninsula which is the closest spot to the Yerevan-Sevan highway to admire the panoramic view.

There are also several hiking trails and if you are an ecotourism lover, Sevan National Park is definitely a great choice. With trails through mountains, tourists can explore the region’s diverse terrain enjoying the view of the lake. There are also some MTB tours to check for those willing to explore natural wonder through thrilling routes.

Besides, nature lovers can also discover the best birdwatching spots here. It’s worth mentioning that there is a breeding colony of Armenian Gull, Dalmatian Pelican, and other birds.

Sevanavank and Hayravank Monasteries

Sevanavank is arguably one of the most popular historical sites in Armenia. This medieval monastery was originally built on an island but later the island transformed into a peninsula due to water level. The monastery was founded in the late 9th century and includes Surb Arakelots and Surb Astvatsatsin churches. During the churches, there are several khachkars one of which features the image of Jesus Christ. It’s an active monastery that hosts services and weddings, and tourists can witness a wedding or a baptism ceremony especially if visiting on Saturday or Sunday.

Although less popular among tourists, Hayravank monastery is definitely worth visiting. It was built between the 9th and 12th centuries and is located along the southwest shore of the lake. You can hardly imagine a better place to enjoy the tranquility of Sevan water sitting next to it.

Noratus Cemetery

khachkars at Noratus cemetery

A beautiful yet not that popular sport is Noratus Cemetry having the largest collection of khachkars (cross-stones). The place is home to 1,000 khachkars with the oldest dating back to the 10th century.

Strolling through this old cemetery, you’ll be awestruck by the unique motifs and detailed craftsmanship of the stones. It’s free to enter and is a museum under the open sky.

The legend says the villagers used khachkars to protect themselves from the Tamerlane invasion. They dressed up the stones and put swords nearby to make them look like soldiers. Seeing so many soldiers ready to repel the attack, Tamerlane’s army retreated.

Swimming and Water Sports

Sevan is Armenia’s go-to destination for water activities like swimming and boating. Swimming season starts in June if you are not afraid of cold water. Actually, locals like to swim from July to September. This is also the season when jet skiing is particularly popular, and Shorzha beach offers windsurfing and waterskiing opportunities. Tourists can also enjoy paddle boarding on Sevan’s serene waters, offering a perfect blend of sport and relaxation. Those who do not like sports and want to explore the lake from a water angle can simply take a boat trip.

Gastronomic Delights

Sevan trout

The visit to Sevan is incomplete without trying its renowned Sevan trout – ishkhan, a symbol of the local gastronomy. Known for its tender texture and exquisite flavor, this local delicacy is prepared in restaurants throughout Sevan. Ishkhan is perfect for grilling or baking. Accompanied with unique sauces and premium Armenian white wine it’s a star of any menu.

Additionally, seafood lovers can enjoy grilled crayfish kebabs, another delicacy that you can hardly find in other restaurants. If you do not like fish, there is a variety of traditional meat dishes in any restaurant.
