Any classic tour in Armenia cannot but include a visit to Garni Temple and Geghard Monastery. These two historic sites are located close to each other, so they are always combined in one trip. This was a delightful journey through history, culture, and nature. Visiting Garni Temple, the Italian ladies could feel the magic of a Greco-Roman colonnaded structure standing in Armenia, far from the places they are used to see it.
Next, the visit was to the Geghard Monastery. It is certainly one of those fascinating places where you can see medieval history and feel the spirituality. The monastery’s intricate rock-cut architecture is likely to captivate any tourists, and this was not an exception this time.
Of course, we could not ignore Lake Sevan. With its views of turquoise water and mountains in the background, Sevan is a peaceful retreat. In addition, there is the Sevanavank Monastery with its khachkars that adds a historical touch to the visit.

Our next stop during the Armenia tour was Dilijan, a resort town that will remind Italian tourists of Switzerland. Dilijan boasts a refreshing climate, rolling hills, and charming architecture.

Some Italians may be aware of San Lazzaro degli Armeni, the monastery of the Mekhatarists, an Armenian Catholic congregation. However, the monasteries of the Armenian Apostolic Church differ in their appearance. Armenia is popular for its stunning monasteries, and two of the most captivating are Khor Virap and Noravank. While San Lazzaro is popular for its manuscripts and scholarly heritage, Khor Virap and Noravank offer a more rugged and ancient experience.
The trip to these historical landmarks opened a new chapter for our Italian guests. The location of Khor Virap with its panoramic views of Mount Ararat is striking. However, descending to the pit where Gregory the Illuminator, Armenia’s patron saint, was imprisoned for 13 years was far more exciting.
