azat reservoir view

The locals say if Armenia had a sea, it would be a perfect country. The reason is sometimes you feel the need to rest somewhere by the water. Traditionally, the scenic Lake Sevan has been the go-to destination for locals seeking relaxation and recreation. However, many are now turning to the numerous reservoirs in Armenia for their leisure activities.

Around 80 reservoirs with a total area of 988 million cubic meters have been constructed in Armenia. Their purpose is to regulate mountain rivers, collect melt and rainwater for irrigation, and meet energy needs.

These reservoirs are not only vital for irrigation and energy production but are a great destination for tourists. One of them is the unique Azat reservoir, a great place to enjoy breathtaking views, cycling or paddleboarding.

Where Is Azat Reservoir?

Azat Reservoir is located in the Ararat region of Armenia, near the village of Lanjazat, at an altitude of 1050 meters above sea level. You can find the Azat reservoir at the foot of the rocky red Mt. Yeranos. It is fed by meltwater from the Geghama mountain range flowing through the Azat River valley.

Overall, the reservoir has a volume of 70 million cubic meters. It has been operational since 1976 and is crucial for irrigating the Ararat valley.

The best road leading to Azat lies from the village of Garni, another iconic travel destination for every tourist. So, you can combine two visits in one and rest by the water after a trip to the Garni Temple.

Tour to Azat Gorge

The main reason to visit Azat is to enjoy stunning views. Visit in mid-spring to witness its emerald, green waters at peak volume. The picturesque surroundings reflect the sky and clouds, creating a unique and serene atmosphere. Those visiting the reservoir often say the color of the water changes depending on the weather and time of the day.

For an adventurous perspective, you can watch the reservoir from the sky paragliding if you are an extreme lover. Paddleboarding is another popular activity here. The reservoir’s beauty and calm waters make it ideal for SUP boarding.

The Azat Reservoir and Gorge are perfect for experienced cyclists, offering rocky paths and exciting routes. Hiking in this area is also rewarding. However, be ready for the hot weather. As the area lacks shade and vegetation, it’s rather hot in summer. Bring sunscreen, enough drinking water, and a small tent if you want to spend several hours here. Swimming is not allowed here and it’s better to enjoy the views from a distance. The thing is the shores are muddy and soft.

Local Attractions Near Azat Reservoir

garni temple

As mentioned above, the Azat reservoir is located not far from one of the most-visited sites in Armenia. Of course, we mean the Garni Temple and Symphony of Stones.

Let’s start with Garni which is an ancient pagan temple built in the 1st century AD, dedicated to the sun god Mihr. This architectural marvel is the only standing Greco-Roman building in Armenia and it stands on the edge of the Azat gorge. Nearby, you can explore the Symphony of Stones, a natural formation that resembles a giant organ. These basalt columns formed by volcanic activity stretch along the Azat River.

For those who love outdoor activities, there are excellent cycling and hiking routes that connect these historical sites. You can start your journey at Garni Temple, hike down to the Azat Gorge to see the Symphony of Stones, and then continue to the reservoir.

If you’re traveling by car, a visit to the Geghard Monastery is a must. By the way, the monastery and upper Azat valley are recognized as UNESCO World Heritage sites. Geghard is known for its rock-cut churches and khachkars and is an example of Armenian medieval architecture at its peak. The complex is unique because of its location and harmonious blend with the surrounding landscape.

Other Reservoirs to Visit in Armenia

In addition to Azat, there are several other wonderful reservoirs worth visiting. Each has its unique vibe and plays a crucial role in the local ecosystem.

In the Aragatsotn region, the Aparan Reservoir is a vital source of water for drinking and agriculture. It is located north of Mt. Ara and east of Mt. Aragats. The reservoir is stunning year-round, especially on clear days when Mt. Aragats’ southern and eastern summits are visible. In addition to scenic trails and pine forest, there are also the remnants of the 5th century St. Paul and Peter Church on the left shore of the reservoir.

Kechut Reservoir in Vayots Dzor is a part of the unique ecosystem of the resort town of Jermuk. Popular for its hot springs, fizzy mineral water, and wide, fairy-like waterfall, Jermuk is a city defined by water. One of the prominent historical sites here is the 10th-century Gndevank Monastery.

If you love clear water and wild but beautiful landscapes, you will be captivated by Arpi Lake which is also a reservoir. This protected reserve in Shirak province is a nature lover’s paradise. It is home to a diverse ecosystem with numerous bird and wildlife species. Visitors can enjoy hiking trails around the lake, picnicking on the beach, birdwatching, fishing, horseback riding, and other activities.
